Stations/Camps/Stops, October 11 - November 3 1995.
Installation for The Santa Barbara Museum of
Art's Ridley Tree Education Center at McCormick House, Santa Barbara, California.
Cardboard and packing tape. Three forms, sizes:6"H x 4'4"W x 11'L; 6"H x 4'3"W
x 15'6"L; 6"H x 4'5"W x 16'6"L. Hall way dimension: 7'8"W x 64'L.
The hall way is a place of transition. Within this space are three forms that derived their shapes from topographical maps of military installations on Guam, Hawaii, and California. These sites are the locations of Viet Namese refugee camps from 1975 until the early1980s. The theme of "travel" is physically and metaphorically referenced through the act of walking. The viewer/ participant footsteps sinks upon the soft forms, echoing the instability experienced by the displaced refugees.
